ECU Blasts SCOTUS for Siding With Billionaires and Special Interests Over Voters in NRSC v. FEC
WASHINGTON, DC — This morning, the Supreme Court ruled in National Republican Senatorial Committee v. Federal Election Commission—a GOP-backed effort to dismantle decades-old limits on coordinated spending between political parties and candidates. The case, already being billed as Citizens United 2.0, wipes out some of the last remaining restrictions on unlimited election spending left intact after the Court’s disastrous 2010 ruling, which gave rise to the prominence of super PACs and dark money spending in American elections.
End Citizens United (ECU) President Tiffany Muller, a leading national expert on campaign finance law, is available for comment to break down the case in plain language, explain what’s at stake, and outline the potential consequences for our elections.
Muller issued the following statement about the Supreme Court’s destructive ruling today:
“Today, the Supreme Court sided with Republicans to make politicians less accountable to everyday people. The ruling hands even more power to billionaires and special interests to drown out the will of voters by allowing earmarked contributions to parties. Americans across the political spectrum are calling for accountability and transparency in our elections, but the Court has chosen to move in the opposite direction.
“This ruling will inject even more money into campaigns and make it easier for corporations and wealthy donors to shape our government to serve their interests. It strips away safeguards designed to prevent corruption and expands the influence of political parties and the donors who bankroll them, while leaving Americans with less power and fewer protections.
“With this decision, the Court is sending a clear message: The voices of voters matter less than the checkbooks of billionaire donors. The American people deserve a government that works for them, not one serving special interests. End Citizens United will not stop fighting to get money out of politics and ensure our government is accountable to the people.”
