End Citizens United Praises Representative Julie Johnson’s Legislation Cracking Down on Deceptive AI
End Citizens United (ECU) Action Fund, one of the leading anti-corruption and government accountability groups in the country, today praised Congresswoman Julie Johnson (TX-32) for introducing legislation to combat deceptive uses of artificial intelligence in political campaigns.
“We are living in the Wild West era of AI practices in political campaigns. As AI gets more advanced and deeply integrated into our daily lives, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to separate fact from fiction. Without clear guardrails, bad actors will exploit this technology to mislead voters and undermine our democracy,” said End Citizens United Action Fund President Tiffany Muller. ”Congresswoman Johnson’s bill is a commonsense, urgently needed safeguard that protects voters from being manipulated by fake images and videos designed to distort the truth. Voters have a right to know that what they’re seeing and hearing in our elections is real.”
The legislation prohibits the use of AI to create deceptive videos or images of candidates for federal office that a reasonable person would believe to be authentic. This includes manipulated content created by splicing, combining, or otherwise generating false representations through AI. The bill also empowers those targeted by deceptions with a private right of action to seek injunctive relief, damages, and attorney's fees.
