End Citizens United // Let America Vote Statement on the Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act
End Citizens United // Let America Vote (ECU // LAV) President Tiffany Muller issued the following statement on the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) of 1965:
“Sixty years ago, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law to protect the freedom to vote and guard against racial discrimination in our elections. Today, that promise is under assault. Donald Trump, congressional Republicans, and Republican-controlled state legislatures are waging a coordinated campaign to silence Americans––particularly voters of color––by blocking access to the ballot box. From voter roll purges and discriminatory ID laws to the closure of polling locations in minority communities, there’s no doubt about what they’re doing and who they’re targeting.
“The Supreme Court’s extremist right-wing majority gave the green light for this movement. By gutting key protections in Shelby Country v Holder and Brnovich v DNC, the Court enabled and legalized discriminatory practices that were outlawed by the Voting Rights Act.
“This anniversary is both a reminder of what’s at stake and a call to action. We must keep up the fight and demand Congress pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act to stop corrupt, power-hungry politicians from attacking our most fundamental freedom and to ensure our elections reflect the will of people.”
