End Citizens United Blasts Trump’s Commutation of Career Criminal George Santos
WASHINGTON, DC — Tiffany Muller, president of the anti-corruption organization End Citizens United, released the following statement in response to news that Donald Trump has granted clemency to disgraced former congressman George Santos, who pleaded guilty last year to federal charges of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.
“George Santos is a brazen career criminal and one of the most shameless con men ever to set foot in the halls of Congress. Trump’s commutation of his sentence is a disgrace — though entirely predictable from a president with a long history of using the pardon power as a tool of corruption to reward his political allies.
“Santos is the 10th Republican congressman to receive a pardon or commutation from Trump, joining a long roster of political donors, loyalists, and even January 6 insurrectionists. All have been rewarded under the former president’s corrupt, two-tiered system of justice, while the DOJ is weaponized against his political opponents. This is abuse of power at its worst — a convicted felon using the presidency to protect allies and exact retribution on his enemies.”
Muller, a nationally recognized expert on political corruption, is available for further comment on this development and the dangerous culture of corruption that has come to define the Trump administration.
