End Citizens United Blasts Trump’s Voter Suppression Agenda at State of the Union Address

End Citizens United (ECU) President Tiffany Muller released the following statement following President Trump’s State of the Union address, condemning his calls for heightened voter suppression:

“Tonight, Donald Trump once again made clear that his party’s path to staying in power depends on silencing the American people at the ballot box. The Republican Party’s corruption and loyalty to wealthy donors have led to the economic pain and suffering people are feeling, and they know voters want to hold them accountable. So instead of changing course, they are trying to change the rules of democracy. The SAVE Act, MEGA Act, and other variations of his voter suppression bills all serve the same purpose: protecting Republicans’ congressional majority. Instead of defending their record, they’re trying to change the rules. We will continue working with our allies in Congress to defeat these bills and ensure every eligible voter can make their voice heard.”

Polling ahead of tonight’s address showed that public opinion has turned against Trump, with 52% of respondents saying he has made the economy worse and 72% disagreeing with his administration’s violent immigration enforcement tactics. Americans are facing skyrocketing health care costs and deep economic pain as a result of GOP policies, and they recognize that Republican pay-to-play politics are at the root of their everyday struggles. As Trump sees his approval ratings plummet and grassroots opposition voices grow louder, he has adopted increasingly aggressive efforts to undermine voting rights and take over the midterm elections.

Tomorrow at 6pm ET, ECU is hosting a virtual town hall to debrief the State of the Union and discuss recent anti-corruption initiatives. Joining ECU President Tiffany Muller for this conversation will be Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Rep. Greg Casar (TX-35), Rep. Chris Deluzio (PA-17), and Minnesota Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan. Members of the press are welcome to attend.

For 10 Years, End Citizens United (ECU) has been dedicated to combating the two biggest challenges facing our democracy: the corrosive impact of Big Money in politics and attempts to block access to the ballot box. Since its founding in 2015, ECU has had over 1.4 million donors with an average donation of just $14. The group has more than four million members nationwide and is one of the nation’s leading anti-corruption organizations.
