End Citizens United Statement Ahead of House Vote on SAVE America Act
End Citizens United Action Fund President Tiffany Muller issued the following statement ahead of the House floor vote on the SAVE America Act:
“The SAVE America Act is a federal voter suppression bill designed to help Donald Trump and congressional Republicans cling to power in the midterms by taking control over who gets to vote. This dangerous legislation would give politicians and partisan actors unprecedented authority to interfere in state election processes and block Americans from participating in our democracy.
“After a year of the GOP’s open submission to billionaires and corporate special interests, working families are paying the price for their corrupt agenda, with health care, housing, and groceries becoming harder to afford by the month. At same time, wealthy donors and powerful corporations are enjoying a generational windfall, cashing in on tax breaks, deregulation, and monopoly power.
“When you govern for donors instead of people and know you’re going to lose in November, the only way to hold onto power is to change the rules. That is precisely what the SAVE America Act is designed to do. End Citizens United condemns this dangerous bill and urges Democrats to prevent its passage.”
Introduced by House Republicans in January 2026, the SAVE America Act expands on the repressive provisions in the original SAVE Act by adding additional and unnecessary photo identification requirements to cast a ballot. Voters would be required to prove citizenship through stringent ID requirements when registering to vote and again when they show up at the polls or request an absentee ballot. These documentation criteria are unnecessary, given that states already prevent non-citizens from voting through various longstanding safeguards, and would unnecessarily burden the most vulnerable groups of voters.
Yesterday, Republican leadership on the House Administration Committee held a hearing on the Make Elections Great Again (MEGA) Act, their most draconian voting legislation to date. It would go further than the SAVE America Act by banning universal mail voting, rescinding funding for nonprofits that help register voters, and barring states from counting ballots that arrive after Election Day. It would also outlaw ranked choice voting, a common-sense system that several states use. Trump and his Republican allies have made clear their broad intentions to nationalize the midterm elections and obstruct voting rights.
