PRESS RELEASE

ECU Congratulates No Corporate PAC Candidate Abdul El-Sayed on Senate Win in Michigan

End Citizens United (ECU) President Tiffany Muller issued the following statement celebrating ECU-endorsed Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed’s election in Michigan:

“We’re thrilled to congratulate Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed on this critical win. His powerful campaign was built on the words ‘money out of politics, money in your pocket’ because the cost of government corruption has been a disaster for Michigan families. That simple yet powerful message not only propelled him past the most expensive primary in our nation’s history, but it proved just as effective in the general election. Senator-elect El-Sayed never took a dime of corporate PAC money, put in the work to listen to voters, and inspired a movement focused on bringing reform to Washington. We’re proud he was one of the 300 Democrats who joined Unrig Washington and look forward to working with him to fight for the change that Michiganders are demanding.”

ECU endorsed Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed in the primary and invested a statewide radio ad buy to help elect him in the final weeks of this race. ECU campaigned in Lansing with Dr. El-Sayed less than a month before the election, drawing a crowd of 300 Michiganders for a town hall about tackling pay-to-play in Washington. Dr. El-Sayed also joined the Unrig Washington program alongside more than 300 Democratic candidates, committed to rejecting corporate PAC money, supporting a ban on congressional stock trading, and cracking down on dark money in politics.

Senator-elect El-Sayed built a historic movement across Michigan by calling out the influence of Big Money in politics. He tapped into voter frustrations by repeatedly promising to crack down on government corruption. He has often connected his background in health care reform to the fight to make government accountable to the public, not to special interests.
