RECAP: End Citizens United and Brian Poindexter Take On Big Money in Politics at Town Hall

Parma, OH — End Citizens United (ECU), a national leading anti-corruption organization, today held a town hall with congressional candidate Brian Poindexter. The event focused on how to curb the dark money flooding into our elections and make Congress more responsive to the people.

ECU President Tiffany Muller joined Poindexter in Parma to discuss how money in politics has undermined our democracy, driven up costs, and deterred Congress from holding corporations accountable. With elections more expensive than ever, career politicians like Rep. Max Miller are catering to the whims of special interests at the expense of their constituents. At the town hall, Muller and Poindexter engaged with voters on ideas for ethics reform, cracking down on corporate PACs, and banning stock trading by elected officials.

“Too many politicians are bankrolled by wealthy interests, and they abandon the people who put them in office. Brian Poindexter is a different kind of leader — he refuses to take a dime of corporate PAC money and takes the concerns of Ohioans seriously,” said End Citizens United President Tiffany Muller. “We had a thoughtful conversation today about how to crack down on the corruption that has paralyzed Congress and left working families behind. I’m grateful to Brian and to everyone who came out today because they believe in fighting for a government that serves the people, not Big Money.”

“Our broken campaign finance system has put power into the hands of billionaires and corporate executives, at the expense of working families,” said Brian Poindexter. “It’s time to tackle this problem and get money out of our elections. Ohioans are paying the price for Max Miller’s corruption, and our town hall today showed that voters are ready for change. Poindexter, a former union ironworker and leader on the Brook Park City Council, earned ECU’s endorsement in April. As part of ECU’s Unrig Washington program, Poindexter has also joined more than 280 Democratic candidates committed to rejecting corporate PAC money, supporting a ban on congressional stock trading, and cracking down on dark money in politics.
