ECU Congratulates Abdul El-Sayed on Winning the Democratic Primary for U.S. Senate in Michigan

End Citizens United (ECU) President Tiffany Muller issued the following statement congratulating ECU-endorsed Dr. Abdul El-Sayed on winning the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate in Michigan:

“Congratulations to Abdul El-Sayed on an incredible win. Despite facing an avalanche of outside spending, Abdul never backed away from his message that Washington is rigged for powerful special interests instead of working people. His victory is proof that an unapologetic anti-corruption message can overcome tens of millions of dollars in campaign ads. As we look to the general election, that message will become even more potent given Mike Rogers’ history of selling Michiganders out in favor of his special interest donors. We look forward to helping Abdul win in November and holding this seat for Democrats.”

ECU endorsed Dr. Abdul El-Sayed because he is making anti-corruption a central campaign message and backing it up by refusing to take corporate PAC money. In contrast to Republican Mike Rogers, who promptly leveraged his first stint in Congress into lucrative lobbying gigs, El-Sayed is promising to root out the pay-to-play culture in Washington. El-Sayed’s career has focused on public health, from rebuilding a bankrupt Detroit Health Department to creating a program that is canceling up to $700 million in medical debt for Michiganders. He also helped design federal legislation to lower prescription drug prices. El-Sayed was an early member of ECU’s Unrig Washington program, alongside more than 260 Democratic candidates committed to rejecting corporate PAC money, supporting a ban on congressional stock trading, and cracking down on dark money in politics.
